Doddapatre / Ajwain is a famous medicinal plant, the leaves of which are used to treat cough, cold, sore throat, nasal congestion and fever. It also helps in balancing Pitta dosha.
Hot rice and thambuli is a great combination. Here goes a quick recipe, do try it sometime:
Ingredients:
Dodda patre / Ajwain leaves: 10-12 leaves
Curry leaves: 8-10 leaves
Shunti / Ginger: 1/2 inch (grated)
Pepper pods: 3-5
Jeera / cumin seeds: 1/2 spoon
Green chilli : 1 or 2
Grated Coconut: 1/4th cup
Sour curd / buttermilk: 1 & 1/2 cup
Ghee: 1 tsp
Red chilli: 2
Salt: to taste
Mustard seeds: 1/2 spoon
Method:
- wash, clean and chop the ajwain leaves.
- Roast ginger, pepper, green chilli, jeera with few drops of ghee for 1min and then add ajwain and 5 curry leaves to it and roast for 2-3mins till the leaves turn soft and change their color. Turn off the flame and allow few mins for them to cool.
- Grind the roasted ingredients along with grated coconut and salt adding a little water to make it a paste.
- Now mix the soft paste with curd / buttermilk and adjust it as to get required consistency (preferably thin).
- Now temper the thambuli. In a small kadai, heat one spoon ghee, add mustard seeds, jeera, curry leaves, red chilli to fry it. Pour the tempering on the tambuli.
